Miniatures

In an upcoming Miniature exhibition by the Townsville Art Society, Emily will enter this sweet portrait of a wonderful lady that Emily spent some treasured time with in Papua New Guinea.  One of the last Motuan potters of Papua, Boio and Emily would often sit together and share traditional and temporary pottery techniques.  Boio holds a special place in Emily’s heart and memories.

Paint and Printing.  A return to lino and a touch of watercolour has Emily producing this lovely Cassowary, a tropical bird found here in the north of Queensland and in the jungles of Papua New Guinea.

not the whole image but a tight croption, adds a little drama to this powerful portrait.

Commissions have been popular since Emily’s Watercolour Exhibition held a month or so back.  This one now part of an international group of people who appreciates Emily’s ability to produce bright, emotional watercolour portraits.

Portrait of a woman from the Highlands region of PNG, from the recent Melanesian Festival of Art and Culture

Portrait of a woman from the Highlands region of PNG, from the recent Melanesian Festival of Art and Culture.  40cm x 30cm.

The recent Melanesian Festival of Art and Culture was a fantastic opportunity for all to see Melanesian culture in all its vibrant colour.  While it never reached the intensity of the famous festivals of Goroka or Mt Hagen, the 11 day MFAC gave the viewer a longer period of time to take it all in.  Sing-sing groups and craft workers from all over Melanesia spent the duration of the festival displaying traditional dance, song, and a way of life that is quickly becoming part of history.

It was a golden opportunity for Emily to put watercolour to paper and produce some exquisite portraiture.

Emily's Art Exhibition

I apologise in advance for not updating this blog for some time now, but I come with good news as Emily is still painting and has recently exhibited in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.  The exhibition was inspired by the life, the people and the culture of Papua New Guinea and part of that collection was a series of portraits.

The portraits were largely inspired by the recent poorly organised 4th Melanesian Festival of Arts and Culture held in the nation’s capital and regional centres around PNG.  Inviting Melanesians from throughout the Pacific, they gathered in locations and despite the logistic issues, the participants proudly displayed their rich history through voice and movement.

More to come.

Excitement!

Great News, the linocut featured in the previous post has won the Townsville Art Society’s Open Prize… Emily Hill is so excited to have won the prestigious Open Award and has been interviewed by local Townsville media.  Hopefully we can post a full size shot of the image here!

Awesome!
